Books That Made Me Laugh Out Loud!

So confession, I haven’t read a lot of traditionally funny books. I haven’t read any books that are categorized in the comedy genre, but I would like to! So this post is going to show you the books that have made me laugh, books that I have on my shelf that I believe will be funny, and then funny books I want to read.

Spoiler alert: at the end I will be asking for your help with recommendations! I want to start reading a broader range of genres and I believe that to be funny, you have to be smart. So I want to read all the smart books.

My Read LOLs

Rainbow Rowell

Rainbow Rowell is hilarious. The first three on this list, Eleanor & Park, Fangirl, and Attachments, were my favorites! Her pop culture references are so smart and she’s extremely clever with dialogue.

Maggie Stiefvater

Not only are Maggie Stiefvater’s books complex, her characters are as well. They are so intricate and have very distinct personalities. Maggie also is known for being very adept with language. Her eccentric characters who say brainy things have surprised me into laughing more than once.

Leigh Bardugo

With Leigh Bardugo the comedy comes from the sass. In everything she writes, there is a character that can really dish it out to someone. I love her strong female characters that make my laugh by completely roasting their fellow characters.

Cassandra Clare

I would be remiss in not adding Cassandra Clare. I haven’t read The Dark Artifices yet but it’s going to be read very soon. Like Leigh Bardugo, each character is super sassy. They all partake in a lot of witty repartee which delighted me into laughing when I read.

On My Shelf

I have a few on my shelf that I am pretty sure are going to be hilarious. I got both of them from Book of the Month because their reviews all said they were heart warming and hilarious.

Comedy I Need to Read

All of these seem hilarious and I am a fan of their authors in one way or another. For Vacationland: Tales from Painful Beaches by John Hodgman, I am not familiar with John Hodgman but I think vacation humor is hilarious because you’re supposed to have fun but you’re actually just uncomfortably hot, chubby in your swimsuit, and worried about your skin burning! (Or is that just me.)

Have you read anything on this list? Did you think it was as funny as I did? Also, any funny recommendations would be totally appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

About Leah

Hi! I'm Leah. I like books, TV, and plants. I love writing about it all. Earnest Hemmingway said "Write hard and clear about what hurts," and I aspire to do just that. Thanks for reading!

  1. I couldn’t really get along with Rainbow Rowell but maybe I just need to read some other of her stories? So far I’ve only tried Fangirl and one short story. I think I’ll give Landlines and Attachments a go.
I totally have to agree on Bardugo being super good at humor, though! Even if her books are not really aimed at humor. She’s just a really clever person and able to come up with the best lines 🙂
Awesome list, Leah! I can’t wait to read some Maggie Stiefvater too.
